Bipolar hemiarthroplasty of the hip is a surgical procedure used to treat certain types of hip fractures, particularly those involving the femoral neck (the part of the thigh bone that connects to the hip joint). In this procedure, only the femoral head (the ball-shaped top of the thigh bone) is replaced with a prosthetic component, while the native acetabulum (socket of the hip joint) is left intact. Indications : Bipolar hemiarthroplasty is typically indicated for elderly patients with displaced femoral neck fractures, especially those with pre-existing arthritis or limited mobility. It may also be used for patients with certain types of hip fractures, such as those resulting from avascular necrosis (loss of blood supply to the femoral head). Advantages : Preservation of Acetabulum : By leaving the acetabulum intact, bipolar hemiarthroplasty preserves the patient's own bone and cartilage in the hip joint, reducing the risk of complications such as loosening or wear of the acetabular component. Reduced Risk of Dislocation : The bipolar design allows for greater stability and range of motion compared to unipolar implants, reducing the risk of dislocation. Simplified Revision Surgery : If revision surgery is needed in the future, the intact acetabulum allows for easier conversion to a total hip replacement.
