PF nailing, or proximal femoral nailing, is a surgical procedure used to stabilize fractures of the proximal (upper) part of the femur (thigh bone), particularly those involving the neck or head of the femur. This procedure involves inserting a specially designed nail into the intramedullary canal of the femur to provide stability and facilitate healing. Indications : PF nailing is commonly indicated for fractures of the proximal femur, including : Intertrochanteric fractures: Fractures that occur between the greater and lesser trochanters of the femur. Subtrochanteric fractures: Fractures that occur below the lesser trochanter, extending into the shaft of the femur. Femoral neck fractures: Fractures that occur within the neck of the femur, just below the ball-shaped head of the femur. Advantages : Stability : PF nailing provides stable fixation of proximal femur fractures, allowing for early mobilization and weight-bearing. Preservation of Blood Supply : Unlike some other surgical techniques, PF nailing preserves the blood supply to the femoral head, reducing the risk of avascular necrosis (loss of blood supply leading to bone death). Minimally Invasive: : PF nailing requires only a small incision, reducing soft tissue trauma and the risk of infection compared to open surgical techniques. Reduced Complications : PF nailing is associated with lower rates of nonunion (failure of the fracture to heal) and implant failure compared to other fixation methods.
